The Terrible Damage of Lockdowns

December 14, 2020. Out of 80,000 football fans in a large stadium, how many are likely to die from Covid-19? Scared out of their wits by the experts, most people would probably estimate something like two percent.

Worldometer reports that Covid-19 has killed 300,000 Americans. The U.S. population is 300,000,000. That’s not two out of a hundred. Covid deaths nationwide have numbered only one out of a thousand.

But those are reported deaths. Most Covid deaths occur among people over 70, especially those who’ve had infirmities alongside Covid, like heart disease, pneumonia, and cancer. Determining the primary cause requires an elaborate procedure doctors don’t have the time or money for.

The federal government pays hospitals $13,000 for each Covid admission and $39,000 for a Covid patient on a ventilator. Providing the virus is present, doctors, aware that the hospital needs money, tend to record Covid-19 as the primary cause of death, even when it wasn’t. I assume that actual Covid deaths were half as frequent as the reported deaths. Instead of one in 1,000, actual Covid deaths would be one in 2,000.

People over 70 are the great majority of those who die from Covid-19. Most people attending professional football games are under 70. I therefore assume that football fans killed by Covid would number one in 6,000.

How many times does 6,000 go into 80,000? The answer is 13.3 times. That’s the number of people in a huge stadium who would die from Covid. Fourteen people are a minuscule portion of 80,000 fans. Covid-19 is not deadly.

But the 80,000 people are not in the stadium. They’re home. How many will die because of the lockdowns themselves?

We can only guess, because the consequences are long-lasting. Parents have stopped getting their children immunized for diphtheria, whooping cough, and polio, which are far deadlier than Covid-19. People have skipped chemotherapy, because they think Covid is deadlier than cancer, which it is not. Doctors are already seeing unnecessary deaths from diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that one in four young adults have seriously considered suicide. Depression, alcoholism, and child abuse have risen significantly. Drug-related deaths have soared. Kids are not learning job skills and not learning much at all out of school. I estimate that, over time, the deaths and negative consequences of the American lockdowns will exceed those of the disease itself by at least ten times and are especially hard on the poor.

The U.N. has estimated that 130 million people in poor countries will die of starvation because of the slowdown of advanced economies caused by lockdowns.

The lockdowns are all about saving lives, right?

Lockdowns do not save lives. Instead, they postpone immunity. Lockdowns cost lives, and they decimate the quality of life. Hospitals are overwhelmed because people are wearing masks and keeping their distances, suppressing immunization.

People under 70 should mingle and go to work, with no masks or distancing. Stadiums should be filled. Children should attend school. Immunized younger people would immunize the older folks.

Under those circumstances, Covid-19 would have died months ago, without the personal and economic havoc the lockdowns are causing. The lockdown policies of the liberal elite are so unthinking and so damaging as to be well-nigh criminal.
