Force Does Not Help the Poor

When told about my book, America’s Governments, Enemy of the Poor, Linda said, “Good title. You should approach Bernie Sanders and Black Lives Matter. They want to help the poor too.”

True, but they want to do it the same way governments have tried to help the poor for over a century: Apply force with laws and regulations.

Force has made things worse for the poor. The actual, long-run results of most uses of government force, by my observation, are opposite to the intended results.

The federal government has some eighty-five programs to help the poor. The gap between rich and poor has widened nevertheless.

My book highlights thirty-six ways that American governments make life more difficult and more expensive for the poor. Federal attempts to improve the economy are the most damaging. The severe downturns they’ve caused have devastated the poor.

The bureaucrats remain unaware that applying force usually fails. Force is their thing. They’re loathe to give it up. Let’s give them up and abolish the Civil Service System.

Government should become significantly smaller and less intrusive. If it stopped trying to help the poor and stopped helping the rich with crony capitalism, the poor would gain wealth faster than the rich.

Nice change. Let’s try it.
